Fast and Furious

Fast and Furious

Different plot, different cars, same  actors, same result. Some nice cars, not enough racing, unnecessary extra scenes, but worth a rent, not a purchase.

Knowing

End of the world movie with some religious undertones and some definite horror-like moments that build a lot of suspense.

I really enjoyed this movie.

<Spoiler>

It was interesting to see the Director dance around the religious aspect. They built up the story throughout the movie until you really get  the feeling they wanted the ending  to be representative  of the biblical beginning of the Earth, but at every critical turn they switched back to a scientific, possibly Intelligent Design, explanation. The figures that follow them through the movie maintained a physical-looking form at their transformation but had an aura  around them that could be considered wings, as if angels. His dad as a pastor and he as a lost son was complimentary, but you can’t really expect an astrophysicist at MIT to believe in a higher power so it fit in. The single tree on the hill at the end could have been indicative of the tree at the Garden of Eden. But as was mentioned in the film, it could all be that the mind sees what it wants to see.

Thick as Thieves (USA Title “The Code”)

USA Title "The Code"

USA Title "The Code"

Interesting cops and robbers movie with a good plot, twists and turns for an ending, but relatively low budget. It was released direct-to-DVD in the US and probably appropriately so. It involves Morgan Freeman in an atypical role. It was worth the cost of the rental, but I’m glad I didn’t buy it.

Brief opinion: It’s like watching a 141 minute Dateline special. I’m glad I had other things to do at the same time.

Happy Fourth of July (yesterday)

Yesterday we had about 20 people over to “blow stuff up”. Combined with my neighbors on each side we had an unprecedented show. Afterwards, people came from several blocks away to tell us our show was better than the city’s main show, the golf club’s, and everyone else they’d seen. Even had a couple of local celebrities stop by and say it was ridiculous. Do you think I have a single photo from the night? Nope.

I stayed up with my nephew playing Guitar Hero World Tour till 7AM this morning. I didn’t even get out of bed till almsot 1:30 today.

Monster Trucks

Went to see the Monster Trucks recently. Pretty good time. Really makes me want something with serious horsepower.

APRICORN ADW-USB-KIT IDE/PATA/SATA to USB HDD Adapter

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812161002

This thing is awesome for when you find a drive laying around and nee to figure out what’s on it without shutting a system down or opening up an external holder, adding the drive, and then starting to explore. It could use a longer AC cord but otherwise it’s never let me down yet. Using it right now till my new 2.5″ eSATA enclosure comes in. I’ve used the PATA and 2.5″ SATA interfaces so far with no problems.

Rating: Solid 4 pigs.

Belkin F5U304-WHT 4 port USB Hub

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817394025

Hey, it’s a USB hub. You plug it in and plug stuff into it. It works. It has lights built-in below the white plastic so they’re quite dim, but I think you know if you have something plugged into it. They’re not activity lights if you’re looking for that. Two plugs on top, two on the back. It has a wire-running channel as well, but that’s not something I’d use.

It works.

Vantech NST-260SU-BK eSATA and USB 2.5″ enclosure

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392009

I should have read all the information before I bought this. It only supports drives up to 160GB, so me putting a 500GB drive into it was fruitless. I paid $28 for it, but would spend $4.70 in restocking fees and $9.89 to ship it back, so I sold it to a friend for $15 and called it a wash. I have a replacement enclosure on order that should be in next week.

Hmm, I think I need a “3 out of 5 pigs” type of  rating system here. Better get out MS Paint…
